Listener Memories: A fond memory -
I grew up in WC, graduated from Henderson in '80. My
parents and three of my sibs are still in WC; I settled in Lancaster
after moving all over the country in the 80's and 90's. These details
matter - I always longed to get back to the area, in some part because
of WCHE.
Back in '77 - '78, my older sister dated a 'che
afternoon guy - Rob Partridge. He was a great guy - we got along very
well, and he would let me come into the studio and watch him work as the
teletype machine would spit out the news (so that's the sound I would
hear on KYW in my Dad's car...!) and Rob would let me read it as he
prepped. He spun old records, using the 12 days of Christmas (partridge
in a pear tree) as his bumper music, and did everything - he was the
only one there for his shift. I was so hooked as high school freshman,
that I swore I'd be in radio forever.
Well, life happened instead.
It was nice to recall Rob & his kind way of showing me
the inner workings of a real station. I'm glad to see that 'che is still
around - it was always my favorite (I have to say that until I had an FM
radio in my bedroom, 'che and WFIL were the regulars. I recall that 'che
went off the air in the evening, and as 'coj [the mandatory school
closing station] dropped their power in the evening, I'd surf the
dial...until the morning, when I could catch 'che again.
